Gluten-Free Condoms?

In addition to organic condoms, many people believe that gluten-free products are just another marketing ploy, but the small percentage (at least 1%) of Americans that suffer from Celiac Disease know how important gluten-free products are to their health especially when they have sex.

Those hurting from Celiac Disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity can experience very uncomfortable symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and even Dermatitis Herpetiformis which can be described as an “itchy, blistering rash” if lubricants containing gluten comes in contact with their mouth. This can totally ruin the mood.

Luckily, LOLA, a personal care company made for women by women, is now producing gluten-free, paraben-free, fragrance-free, and casein-free condoms made with natural rubber latex so that they can “eat the meat” without an allergic reaction.

Condoms themselves aren’t known to contain gluten but the lubricant can contain gluten because it is used as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and/or filler in personal care products.

While some medical experts believe that it decreases the risk of an outbreak, others don’t believe that gluten-free condoms are necessary.

“The main advantage of these organic condoms, if you will, isn’t so much that they have gluten or not… it’s that they’re a little bit more compulsive about saying what’s in the packet, as opposed to a conventional condom manufacturer,” Deepak A. Kapoor, MD, President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York told MensHealth.com.

These condoms may cost you a pretty penny. One box containing 12 single wrapped condoms will run you $10.

Whether you’re suffering from celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, it may be a good idea to keep these condoms handy before you get handsy with your sexual partner to not only avoid STD’s and unwanted pregnancy but also avoid Dermatitis Herpetiformis.
